Where to put the ATM in a small business

What I look for

• Near the door or the checkout, where people see it without looking for it
• Good light. People don't like taking cash out in a dark corner.
• A clear path to it, with a sign if it isn't visible from the door
• An outlet close by, and a floor I can bolt it to

Spots that usually work

Beside the register in a bar or convenience store. Just inside the entrance of a laundromat, before people reach the washers. Anywhere people already stand and wait.

If it isn't getting used

Your monthly statement shows the withdrawal count. If it's lower than we expected after the first couple of months, I'll look at whether moving the machine a few feet would help. Sometimes it does a lot.
